Quick answer: whisk 1.5 grams of matcha into 40 ml of water at 70 to 80 °C, froth 180 ml of barista oat milk at 60 to 65 °C, pour it into your cup and pour the matcha over it last. In three minutes you have a creamy matcha latte with a soft, lightly sweet taste. Barista oat milk froths best; never let the milk boil.
Oat milk is the most popular milk for a matcha latte in the Netherlands, in cafés and at home. Below you will find the recipe, which oat milk to choose, how oat milk compares to other milks and the four mistakes we see most often. New to matcha? Start with our beginner's guide.
Recipe: matcha latte with oat milk
For 1 cup · ready in 3 minutes
- 1.5 grams of ceremonial matcha (about ¾ teaspoon)
- 40 ml of water at 70 to 80 °C
- 180 ml of barista oat milk, unsweetened
- Optional: 1 teaspoon of honey or maple syrup
- Sift the matcha into a chawan or small cup to prevent lumps.
- Add the water and whisk with a bamboo whisk (chasen) in quick zigzag movements until you get an even, foamy layer. A milk frother works too.
- Heat the oat milk to 60 to 65 °C. Any hotter and oat milk turns thick and slightly slimy.
- Froth the milk into a soft, glossy foam, not too stiff, and pour it into your cup or glass.
- Pour the matcha last, slowly, over the milk. This gives a beautiful green layer on top of the creamy white. Sweeten if you like.
Prefer it cold? Whisk the matcha into the warm water, fill a glass with ice and cold oat milk and pour the matcha on top for a green layer over white. More variations in how to make an iced matcha latte: 3 variations.
Why does oat milk go so well with matcha?
Ceremonial matcha tastes full and slightly savoury, a flavour known as umami. Oat milk has a mild natural sweetness and a creamy body. Together they make a cup that tastes soft and rounded, without needing added sugar.
Oat milk is also fairly neutral. Coconut drink adds a clear coconut flavour and almond drink can be slightly nutty or thin. With oat milk, the matcha stays the star.
Which oat milk should you choose for matcha?
Quick answer: choose a barista version without added sugar. It contains a little plant oil, so it froths better and tastes fuller.
- Barista or regular: regular oat milk barely froths. Barista versions such as Oatly Barista, Alpro Barista Oat and Minor Figures Barista give a firm, fine foam.
- No added sugar: even unsweetened oat milk contains about 3 grams of sugar per 100 ml. It forms naturally when the oats are processed and gives the natural sweetness. Sweetened versions quickly make your latte too sweet.
- Short ingredient list: oats, water, a plant oil and a little salt is enough.
The difference between brands is mostly thickness. Oatly and Alpro Barista are creamy and full; Minor Figures is lighter, so the matcha flavour comes through more.
Oat milk or another milk?
Figures per 200 ml, rounded and based on the packaging of common products. Brands and recipes differ, so always check the label on your carton.
| Milk | Taste with matcha | Foam | kcal per 200 ml | Protein per 200 ml |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Barista oat milk (Oatly, Alpro) | Creamy, mildly sweet | Very good | approx. 120 | approx. 2 g |
| Barista oat milk (Minor Figures) | Light, neutral | Good | approx. 90 | less than 1 g |
| Soy drink, unsweetened | Neutral, full | Good | approx. 65 to 80 | approx. 6 g |
| Almond drink, unsweetened | Light, nutty | Moderate | approx. 25 to 30 | approx. 1 g |
| Coconut drink (carton) | Clearly coconut | Moderate | approx. 40 | less than 1 g |
| Rice drink | Thin, sweet | Poor | approx. 115 | less than 1 g |
| Semi-skimmed cow's milk | Creamy | Very good | approx. 90 | approx. 6 g |
If you want it as light as possible, choose almond drink. For the creamiest plant-based latte, barista oat milk wins. Soy drink sits in between and has the most protein of the plant-based options.
4 mistakes with matcha and oat milk
1. Heating the milk too much. Above 70 °C oat milk turns thick and slimy and the foam loses its shine. Aim for 60 to 65 °C: warm, but drinkable straight away.
2. Whisking matcha straight into the milk. Matcha dissolves poorly in milk and leaves lumps. Always whisk the matcha in a little warm water first.
3. Using boiling water. Water at 100 °C makes matcha bitter. Let boiled water cool for a few minutes to 70 to 80 °C. Why this matters so much: matcha water temperature.
4. Regular instead of barista oat milk. You end up with a thin latte without foam. A carton of barista oat milk usually costs only a few cents more.
How many calories are in a matcha latte with oat milk?
The matcha itself hardly counts: 1.5 grams is about 5 kcal. Almost all calories come from the milk. With 180 ml of Oatly or Alpro barista oat milk you get about 110 to 115 kcal per cup. With Minor Figures it is about 85 kcal, with unsweetened almond drink about 30 kcal. A teaspoon of honey adds about 20 kcal. Which matcha should you use for a latte?
In a latte you taste the matcha less purely than with water alone, but you still notice the quality. Cheap or culinary matcha quickly turns bitter, flat or greyish green in milk. First-harvest ceremonial matcha stays bright green and soft, even with oat milk.
Our Unmatched ceremonial matcha is first harvest from Kagoshima and certified organic. A 30 gram pouch gives you about 20 cups of 1.5 grams. Shipping within the Netherlands and Belgium is always free, and if you don't like it, you get your money back.
Frequently asked questions
Which oat milk is best for matcha?
A barista version without added sugar, such as Oatly Barista, Alpro Barista Oat or Minor Figures Barista. They froth well and give the latte body. Regular oat milk barely froths.
How much matcha do you use for an oat milk latte?
1.5 grams per cup, about ¾ teaspoon, with 40 ml of water and 150 to 200 ml of oat milk. For a stronger matcha taste, use a little less milk rather than more matcha.
Can you make matcha with oat milk without a whisk?
Yes. Whisk the matcha and warm water with a small milk frother, or shake it in a closed jar. The foam is less fine, but the taste stays good. A bamboo whisk gives the nicest result.
Is oat milk better than almond milk for matcha?
For taste, usually yes: oat milk is creamier and froths better. Almond drink has far fewer calories, though. Choose based on what matters most to you.
Can you prepare a matcha oat milk latte in advance?
Better not. Matcha sinks to the bottom after a few minutes and the foam collapses. Whisk your matcha just before drinking; it only takes a minute.
